Beatting about the Bush
Filed in Nevada 2006I stopped in Beatty. The whole town is owned by the casino. Eddiesworld, or something. Service is…lousy. The restaurant staff didn’t give a hoot about me, only about chatting about their vacation and the cute firemen. The casino has people sadly pinging slot machines in the early afternoon. There is a strange supermarket-size candy store. The souvenir shop guy was nice but seemed to take some satisfaction in describing California’s forest fires and the potential for firest here–a doomandgloomsayer. They had a few here, last weekend. As I haven’t watched news for 4 weeks I wouldn’t know.
I hit a serious wall today. Absolutely exhausted when I got here about 11. So I went to sleep for 3 hours and I’m still tired, but not like I was. The backs of my thighs still hurt a lot from my hiking in Valley of Fire state park (yes, yes, I’ll get to this). The high heat of the last 3 days killed me off, but I do love Las Vegas. It is a silly place.
Down the road is Rhyolite, a ghost town that I want to visit, and a sculpture park that is one of my “must-do’s” for the trip. I will wait until later when it’s a tad cooler, though it’s not so bad here.
