You might have heard of the Bayeux Tapestry. When I was thirteen, I saw it.

I went there with a school group–it was just a long weekend, but it was wonderful. You know how when you’re a kid you need a “buddy” (called “partners” in the UK) to tag along with, because being alone is the ultimate ostracism? For the first time in my life, a chubby kid who was no good at sports, someone picked me. Her name was Paula and I can’t describe how happy I was about that.

We saw the tapestry, of course, wandering along its huge length with funky little phones that told the story. But we also went to one of the World War II graveyards, and saw the sobering lines of uniform white crosses, each one the loss of a father, a son, a brother, a lover. Even at thirteen, I could feel what that meant.

I spent some time on a cliff top, looking moodily out to sea because of it. I still do that, of course. It’s one way I can get centered.

I got kudos for my project book, and won first prize for the photographs I took. I guess that was the first time anyone ever told me I had an “eye.”

So yeah. That was an important trip, and I would have forgotten about it were it not for blogathon.

It’s going to be easy to stay awake, if you keep posting wonderful gems such as this. Love the story about “Paula” (hey that’s my name!) :-)

I never got picked for anything when I was a kid.

Isn’t funny how certain memories trigger others? Ones that we might not recall as important until right THEN?

I’m liking your tripes down memory lane.

Polli: I rarely got picked for anything. Feh.

We made up for it though. ;)

Buffra: Yeah, it is. I guess I’m just posting a biography in 48 parts. ;)

TRIPS down memory lane. To my knowledge, you’ve not eaten 48 posts worth of tripe….

    :P

Hee. I did notice, and considered teasing you, but decided not to.

I have never eaten tripe, nor do I intend to. I might have posted some though. ;)
