Austin
Filed in Nevada 2006The road spat me out onto the loneliest highway, US-50. I was very surprised to find myself navigating steep uphills including a bunch of switchbacks (luckily, the curvy kind, not the sharp kind). After a long, tiring ride this was very challenging, but of course I made it. I did have to stop and regroup atop Austin Summit though–7400′ or so of altitude.
The hotel in Austin had no phones. All the payphones had been stolen. I managed to get online at the library, though the first time I tried, it was down–I jinxed it! Ironically, the friendly owner of the Mountain Motel told me they were putting in satellite stuff the very next day, to offer internet and phone service. They did offer to set me up online with a friend in town, which I thought was awesome, but I got sorted out at the library.
There were lots of old buildings in Austin, and it had a nice vibe. I liked it very much.
