Birthday meme: Albert Einstein

Filed in Blog

Albert Einstein, the original mad professor (if his hair is anything to go by) was born on 14 March 1879.

Obviously, he’s famous. He was brilliant, too. But the part that interests me the most is that he wasn’t entirely a nice person, despite his appealing wild-haired mad scientist look. Did you know he was also a bit of a poop? Genius doesn’t get rid of your responsibilities, and he pretty much abandoned his wife and sons (one of whom turned out to be a violent schizophrenic) when he started to get more opportunities as a scientist, promising in letters to “come back soon” and not seeing them for round about five years. After a long fight during which she was left to struggle financially, his Nobel prize money went to his ex, Mileva Maric, as part of the divorce settlement.

There’s a lot of debate over how much Mileva, a talented physicist herself, had to do with Einstein’s theories. I guess that short of inventing time travel, we’ll never really know.
