9th July: Grimes Point

Filed in Nevada 2006

Grimes Point is an archaelogical site that I somehow missed on my first run down highway 50. I decided to get the missing markers and ended up at this gem of a place. I chatted to a couple of bikers there, sheltering from the heat, and they encouraged me to make the loop trail. I am glad I did.

There are hundreds of petroglyphs up there. All sorts of ritual designs. The little indentations are the oldest; the drawings can be dated according to how faded they were.

If you look carefully at the landscape, you may be able to make out a parallel line on the mountain. That’s where a beach used to be. This whole area used to be underwater.

How things have changed.

It was an awesome, unexpected little side trip. Very peaceful up there, too. The loop trail is very short.
