We set of bright and late for a 10 am start in Napa. We made it around 10:30, but as the whole thing started late it was no big deal.

I’m not going to go into great detail here, mainly because this will make a great photo essay on ravensroads.com. But here’s the gist:

We started at 10:30. We had to assemble boxes, put the right-sized tubes in them according to a guide sheet, shovel in sand to hold them, match the fireworks to the tubes, wire them up, then collapse tiredly in a heap; then we had dinner; then when the general public had been evicted from the supposedly closed street behind us, we went, from very close quarters, kaboom.

Then there was a round of applause, and cleanup. We finished around 1, and Don and I got to a motel around 3 in the morning.

So next time you go to a small-town display, know that somewhere around are some very tired volunteers for whom those cheers and whoops are the best payment you can give.
