Another week, and it’s been one of those oh-wait-my-life-is-now-dramatically-different ones.

We picked up our RV on Monday. It is a ‘90 Coachmen Leprechaun, 26′ long, and we like it very much. We drove it to a couple of “free campgrounds” (the first night was at Wal-Mart which allows, for the most part, overnight camping and the second night was at Flying J truck stop) and have been in a campground ever since. The campground is right next to the railway which means that at all times of day and night there are trains going by blaring out their horns. I like this and find it oddly soothing.

With a stable internet connection and a stable location, we have been working on “stability.” This has mostly meant cleaning the RV and kitting it out, along with the mandatory shopping trips and trips to find things in the storage sheds. We have decided that plastic totes and baskets are the way to go because a) they are dirt cheap and b) they make cleaning and getting things out of closets a lot easier. We have been learning all about the vagaries of RV showers and heating systems and the cats have started to play instead of just sitting around looking sulky and upset. Of course, they will not be happy when we wander over to the Bay Area next week.

We have therefore been mixing periods of frenzied activity with periods of frenzied relaxation and doing absolutely nothing.

After feeling oddly disconnected and even weirder than usual I started the ritual of blogging and writing and suddenly I started feeling much more grounded again.

My parents had their golden wedding anniversary two days ago and I couldn’t reach them on the phone. I deeply regret not being able to be part of the event, too. One thing I really hate is not being able to call home on anything other than a payphone when each time you connect without getting through (the phone line being busy, etc.) the phone card dinks a bunch of minutes off your balance. On my pay-as-you-go phone you can’t dial internationally and I have no need of a contract phone. So yeah, I miss that. It’s about the only thing, so far, and Don is working on voice-over-IP (internet telephony).

I bought vast quantities of groceries today. We made it all fit. When I realized how much I’d bought I just started to laugh–but it all fit. We started from scratch after throwing out a great deal of food that we couldn’t take with us in the move.

After nearly a month of fast food and stuff you can only cook with a microwave, I’m looking forward to making great batches of chilli and sloppy joe sauce and salads.

So, that’s about it. And I’ll leave you with a little announcement: Raven’s RV. It’s up to date to about the 24th of October. By tomorrow it will be up to date and updated (or at least written) in real time, connectivity permitting.
